BEHIND THE MASKS By Thywill

Behind The Masks

5:30pm, Old Carolina. We ordered for the third round of the drinks. By this time, about eight bottles had already been emptied. It was a cool evening. The weather was chill, not a leaf stirred. The DJ turned up the music's decibel and it almost added to the highness emanating from the slurps of alcohol already in our stomachs. It was my first time of drinking more than three bottles of alcohol at a time. I guzzled more amounts, periodically, and simultaneously smoking the oris cigarette which was on top of the table. It was the eve of my birthday, so I decided to get some hangover, lols. The liquor was now tasting like water the more I took, and soon, I emptied the eightieth bottle, Musah was on his tenth.
She walked majestically in, locating the table after ours. She talked with the waiter in a low tone, almost in a style that we could barely hear some whispers. Soon, the garcon returned with her orders: a plate of fish and a bottle of Smirnoff drink. She accepted with a sharp smirk.
I stared at Musah's eyes and I guess he read my language. "Mehn, this girl is beautiful extraordinaire" he said, almost shying away from the comely vibrance emanating from her seasoned smile while she ate.
I caught his crush, we both admired her, but I was already trapped! "This is a moment I can't let go," I thought, still trying not be faster than my nigga. "Kill that fear, and walk up to her!" Musah's voice echoed as I wondered if truly he was serious. Of course, the courage was burning and I knew within me, I had fallen in love already. So I decided to take the chance and let the blessings of providence decide my fate. "Do you care if I join you?" I said, breaking the silence. "Sure you can, perhaps you guys have been gossiping" she replied, devouring the remaining parts of the fish. "Not at all, we were only enchanted by your charisma and almost got trapped by what we saw" I defended. I'm not the savage type, I'm not good with the words too. I had in one occasion missed my chances of dating one beautiful girl because I found it awkward writing odes to get her trapped. I'm just me, simple and straight to my feelings. Perhaps, my abilities with words are extraordinary...that's kinda oxymoronic. We flowed together as we talked, in a manner that I rather didn't expect. Sure, that's my advantage. Her drink finished so I requested for two more bottles. "Do you smoke?" she asked. "Yeah I do, but just cigarettes and you?" I replied asking, trying not to play the innocent role. "I smoke weed" she answered, directing her gauze at me. This is perfect, I thought. I love girls that smoke because they easily get along with moments. Fortunately, my guy had some wraps with him. The environment wasn't comfortable for us to smoke, so I decided to book a room. This is not happening in my imaginations. Her reputation was almost demeaned by the way she flowed with me, as though it wasn't our first time of talking. But she was just simple, straight to her feelings, just like me. The more we conversed, the more I admired her and the feeling was becoming mutual. I waited as we talked about school until she finished the last bottle. Before then, I had already arranged for a room, and Musah had gone inside to keep the weed, ergo he must have booked a room too because that was the last time I saw him.
Sex is something almost everybody doesn't like discussing, especially before the act. We only find ourselves indulging in the act. We feel it's ill and sinful to ascertain one's sexual demands before the play, however, a woman manners hers in her gestures. If not anything else, I was pretty sure she wanted to kiss me, and me, her. We walked into the hotel, locating our room.
Quickly, the moment appeared like a dream. As I tried to open the door, I saw Vanessa coming out with a guy from the room directly opposite to ours. I didn't believe my eyes. Vanessa was my girlfriend. She had told me earlier that day that she travelled to Enugu, to return the next day for my birthday. I was dumbfounded, we both returned each other a livid look. My new girl was confused too. At one instantaneous thought, I regretted my actions, but on another one, I saw it as a chance to decipher her infidelity.
I didn't know the guy, at least he wasn't my friend. They both walked out as we entered our room, smoked and made love.
She has been calling and I've not been picking. I don't know if I should apologize, cos I've fallen in love with Vivian already.
