APOSTATE By Ramirez
Apostate
The last time i checked, people who believe that a virgin gave birth to a god were just mocking those who believe that they will be given 70 virgins if they died for a holy cause.
I don't believe either nor hold any claim of 'supernatural truths'. Yet, my humble position have attracted ridicule, in the guise of bogus questions, from 'skeptics' who never believe that someone can live without recourse or reverence to at least one supernatural entity.
Most often, such questions directed to me have unverifiable answers like; Who 'created' everything, Where would you spend your 'eternity', What 'controls' everything? As if my agnostic position implies omniscience.
Scot Adams in his book 'the god debris' said you can only know if people really believe, by looking at their lifestyle and not by what they profess. To that end, i 'respect' religious suicide bombers who will give up life's greatest gift (life itself) to prove a delusional religious point because they believe its 'truth'. They are far different from other religious people who believe in heaven but will wake everymorning to pray against death which is actually the professed path to heaven.
Why would one die for what one believe to be the truth? Truth is a slow victorious fighter.
If someone at gun point tells me to accept that one plus one is four, why would i argue? Is such believe worth dying for? If same man forces me to recant agnosticism at gun point, why wouldn't i? Is my 'truth' worth my life?
Of course, i am an atheist leaning agnostic who just have this life and no other before or after it, why would i give my life proving a religious point or standing firm upon a religious 'truth'? Whereas everyone happens to posses said truth through circumstantial occurance. Atheism or agnosticism doesn't pride in martyrdom like mainstream religions. In fact atheists or agnostics believe in the present life because, that is the life we really have.
The greatest is happiness! Happiness not as derived from fleeting sensual pleasures but from transcendental virtues like Love, empathy, truth, sincerity, kindness among others. We should lead a happy life and such should not succumb to subscribing to the fears of medieval writers of holy books who by today's standard are not even smarter than a primary 5 pupil concerning the way the world is. Our sense of right and wrong should not be in the same book where a snake and donkey spoke nor in similar mythologies that predates or postdates it. The 21st century scientific thinking man should inquire about human rights and wrongs in relation to human coexistence and collective happiness rather than hide our women in burqas to prevent 'sin'.
The last time i checked religion has out lived its relevance. No wonder Nietzsche declared God to be dead and also more people claiming not to be religious even when they are members of an organized faith. God is still buried in the mind of humans who are not tired of flogging a dead horse.
